Bio
Catherine Dean is a 21 year old coloratura Soprano who is a native of Yardley Pennsylvania. She currently resides in Cleveland Tennessee and is in the process of completing her Bachelor of Arts in Music major emphasis in voice, and a double minor in religion and psychology from Lee University. Her anticipated graduation date is Dec 2015.
Catherine began her music training in piano at the age of 5 and continued with her lessons through high school and in college. She was classically trained using the Suzuki Method by Michael Jacobsen, a teacher at Westminster Choir College in Princeton New Jersey. Jacobsen and his wife mezzo-soprano Danielle Sinclair were the directors of a children's summer Youth Opera Workshop affiliated with Westminster Choir college which Catherine performed in the chorus every summer from the ages of 8-14 in various operas and roles such as: "The Butcher in "Tinker of Tivoli" and Pheobe, the best friend of Pandora in "Pandora's Box." This sparked Catherine's desire in continuing on with studying voice and she became a student of Danielle Sinclair's voice studio Spring 2009. Catherine studied with Sinclair for 3 years performing in various recitals and as a soprano for a small acapella group within the studio. Catherine was also a featured soloist and soprano for the Westminster Community Chorus conducted by Devin Mariman from 2009-2011.
Catherine was also actively involved in the music at her church where she performed in a music group that she had started along with her friends called "His Instruments." She frequently performed with them as a soprano/alto, pianist, and occasionally violinist. She also performed in various vocal competitions like NATS and the Westminster Teen Voice Competition.
At Lee University, Catherine is currently studying with soprano Chery Brendel, and previously with Emily Harbin. She was a soprano and featured soloist in the all womens choir Ladies of Lee conducted by Dr. Loralee Songer, and is a soprano for Lee University Choral Union, a mass choir conducted by Dr. Cameron LaBarr, and is currently soprano in the Lee University Chorale conducted by Dr. William Green, Dean of the School of Music at Lee University. In January 2013, Catherine was privileged to be one of the 200 music students from Lee University who was selected to be in the Lee University Festival Choir chosen to perform at the 57th Presidential Inauguration for President Barack Obama by Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander. This was an extraordinary honor for Catherine and the experience of a lifetime. Catherine also competed at NATS and was a semifinalist in 2013.
In 2014, she will continue to be a member of Choral Union and Chorale, and is a sister of Sigma Alpha Iota- Lambda Eta. She hopes to compete again at NATS and will begin working on her rep for her senior recital a year from this Spring. Catherine will also be taking a cross cultural trip to Germany and Austria in May 2014 and in June through August she will be a vocal coach at Stages Academy. She will teach the children the songs they must learn for their music theatre productions.
Catherine's professional goals include earning her Masters Degree in Choral Conducting, earning a Doctorate, and teaching voice/choir at a college level.
Off stage, Catherine is an experienced dressage equestrian, and enjoys reading, obsessing over J.R.R. Tolkien, spending time exploring scenic Tennessee with her friends, and wasting time on Pinterest.
